Sphinx are large hybrid creatures similar to the griffin and minotaur. There are three versions of the sphinx. Each type is denoted by its different head. All sphinx have the body of a lion, but the different species have the heads of either a man, a ram, or a hawk. All sphinx can fly.
The sphinx are a species of intelligent creature that live in desert areas. Whereas most species with intelligence become involved in magic, sphinx instead tend to be interested more in riddles. Two sphinx that meet will sit together for days trading riddles. Meeting a sphinx is usually disastrous. A sphinx will force you to enter in a riddle contest with him at the price of your own life. If you cannot answer a riddle which he poses correctly, he wins the contest and strangles you. If you answer the question correctly, he wins the contest and strangles you. Anyone who kills a sphinx will find a little treasure in his lair accompanied by hundreds of handwritten books of riddles.
